Ever worry about what people might think of you / your recent work / a shoot / your recent post / status / your new creative venture / your business direction etc etc etc?
I get asked this ALL of the time by my one to one clients. ‘Who should I target? who should I be aiming for?
And the thing is – you’re asking the wrong questions.
Because you can’t target the ‘WRONG’ market or client if you are showing up and sharing work that is true to you, what you authentically believe in, and within areas that you are passionate about and knowledgeable of!!
In short – if you know concretely you’ve spent time and money honing your passion and vision
If you are creating, no-holds barred
Then sure- some people might not be your client.
They might think you’re awful
They might click unfollow
They might decide to speak badly of you
They might leave
They might think you’re bloody amazing
They might follow you more
They might speak brilliantly of you
They might stay
Really, is the fear of what they might think or say or believe a big enough a fear to stop you creating and designing and dreaming and sharing?
But who should you target?
NOBODY if you’re thinking about it from a marketing perspective – because what YOU sell isn’t a paint by numbers formula!
It’s your heart, soul and art in a box
Stop worrying about who to target and what they might think and concentrate instead on what it is you want to create and what you want the impact, your living breathing legacy to be, what your work is ABOUT!!!
Stop creating new businesses new labels new ideas new streams – it’s all ONE when you know what your message is!
Create that first
Then write / create / do / be whatever is in alignment with that message
And then basically LIVE your message because the chances are you’re already doing it anyway!!!
THEN think about who it would help, and why.
NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!
And then when you ask me well how do I monetise it if I don’t have a target client like I asked myself countless times over the years before it all clicked into place and I stopped looking around at what anyone else was doing and stopped following step by step processes to get somebody else’s achievements;
and instead created whatever I wanted to which is part this, the FCA and its part my books and its photography for pleasure and it’s my whole LIFE I realised I get to choose it!!! And what a revelation that is when you truly get to believe it live it breathe it act it be it
That’s when the money comes.
You can monetise what you create if you create from the heart first
Create the life you want to live, first- and it doesn’t have to be mansions and flash cars or even a four hour work week it just has to make you happy every single day, for most of the day!
And THEN you bring THAT into your work and your artistry
Or maybe you bring total misery and chaos and noise and frustration into your artistry because maybe right now that IS what you need and that is your REALITY and far better to accept that and accept it than try to fight against it and create THAT every day because that is your happiness – whatever it is there will always be SOMEONE who needs to hear your message and your story in the way that you tell it, through your artistry and your creations and your vision and your words-
Whatever it is
That is what you do
And then to MONETISE it?
And then you show up in the places where people you know appreciate that message hang out
People that share the same views
Which is why when I wrote my first book, focussing on film photography, I didn’t create it because it was ‘niche’ or because there was a clear ‘target audience’, I wrote it because I got frustrated with everyone asking me a whole ton of questions and having to repeat myself a million times, I thought it would be simple and fun to write it down in a blog post which eventually became so long it had to be a book! and THEN I thought- ok cool, now how can I get this in front of the people that need to see it??
Which YES absolutely involved email marketing and SELLING (oooooh, selling)!! and creating pre-launches and launches and offers and basically knowing how to PROMOTE what I do but the important parts are this –
I created something FUN and USEFUL and from my HEART, FIRST
SECOND – I figured out how to get it in front of people who needed it!
Which, by the way, is not showing up in other peoples online groups and saying sneakily – hey! Look what I made
It’s being brave enough to start your own because you believe there are enough people out there who will value what you have to say
Or periscoping daily
Or blogging daily
Or youtubing daily
Or whatever medium or channel of communication your creativity sits best within
And you just share
And you share in a way that’s helpful in whatever way that looks like for YOU
And you make sure when they visit your site you capture their email addresses because clearly they have shown interest in you and wanted to see what you’ve got so why not give them MORE?
And more and more and more and make them want more and then you charge for it because most people – your target client – understand you need to make a living and someone as precious and brilliant as you deserves to make a brilliant living-
And then these brilliant people tell more people about what you do
The artistry and the vision comes FIRST
and your target client, can tell, you know.
And those that can’t?
not your client. Like the girl who wrote to me last week and said- LOVE your posts, but do you think you could make them a little shorter
Which is kind of the equivalent of saying, love your photos, could you just make them a touch darker, or saying to Picasso, oh cool, LOVE your work, could you make it just a little less weird?
You get it.
Some people will LOVE what you do
Others just won’t get it
They won’t see what you do IS NOT driven by MONEY or COMMERCE, first;
But by love.
But those who do?
Who completely SEE the artistry, love, passion, and creativity BEHIND what you do? (which is your job to do by the way, using your powers of communication to make them see, which is why BLOGGING and NEWSLETTERS or video or whatever communication channel you choose is SO important)
THEY ARE YOUR TARGET CLIENTS AND THEY WILL FLOCK TO YOU.
Which is why you don’t need to think about ‘who to target’ as a primary concern or really any kind of concern, or worry about ‘losing clients’, ever again.
