If you read yesterday’s post, you’ll know that the easiest and most effective way of gaining client bookings is to create for yourself a killer winning strategy, which you follow, edit, and follow; repeatedly, until you hit your goals.
So what should you include in your strategy?
Your winning strategy should include the forms of marketing your that your client wants to see. It’s that simple. Don’t bother running yourself ragged over on Twitter if your maternity clients barely use it! Find + connect with them at local baby groups, baby-focussed shops, pregnancy clinics, and over on Facebook and Instagram. Don’t worry about facebook if you want your clients to see your hard-hitting photojournalism- you’d be much better off creating a dedicated, focussed newsfeed + developing your relationships on Twitter. Etc.
List all forms of marketing that appeal to your target client, and focus your winning strategy around that.
It could include anything from website design to socialising at your target client’s preferred hangouts to hosting charity events. Whatever + wherever it is that appeals most to your target client.
You might also wish to include a brief summary of your target client at the beginning of your strategy, to ensure that your strategy is always focussed, on track, and targeting the right areas for your clients.
4. AIMS + ACTIONS
Write down the aims of your winning strategy. Giving yourself goals and targets to focus on makes you much more likely to succeed, as well as making you feel great when you achieve them.
We already know the overall aim is to book more clients, so break it down into detailed weekly and daily targets.
One goal might look like this
WEEK 1 – Twitter – AIM > 50 new followers
– ACTION > 15 tweets per day – join #wedding wednesday -8 image tweets -20 retweets
(This would be how part of our strategy if we were focussing on growing our twitter audience and connecting with people that matter within our target audience / industry).
5. PLAN LONG-TERM
As well as keeping track of your daily + weekly goals, it is beyond useful to plan out your and monthly goals.
Every January I use a planner to map my personal and professional goals for the year, and every month I use it to create my monthly goals. It sounds like a much bigger task than it really is – I take lots of time over it in January, during that otherwise-sleepy period after Christmas, and then it only takes me about 30 minutes once a month to review it.
Reviewing your goals monthly helps to evaluate your weekly + daily tasks to find out if you’re on track to hitting your big goals for the year.
Do you really want to get more clients? Because this is the hardest part of creating a winning strategy – sticking to it, and protecting it, all of the time.
Sticking to your strategy is the difference between a winning strategy and a forgotten marketing plan. If you want to see real results, stay with it. Stick with your strategy day in, day out, even during the toughest times, and you will see real results.
Set aside weekly ‘protected time’ to review your plan and adjust it for the upcoming week.
Seeing your business grow is almost reward in itself, but there is nothing quite like being able to reward yourself with a shiny new camera or lens is there!
My ultimate reward came when my husband was able to leave his job and join me in business, meaning we got so much more time together with our baby girls; what does your Ultimate Reward look like? Write it at the top of your strategy.
Rewarding yourself gives you that psychological feel-good factor and can actually help you to achieve your goals too- if you reward yourself every week for sitting down and reviewing your plan, your subconscious will eventually tell you that it’s a pleasurable experience, so you’ll look begin to forward to it every week.
And if there is any chocolate left over, please do forward it to the FPA.

You should now have some idea of what your winning strategy should contain, look like, and how to make it work. It’s the formula that grew my own photography business by 1,733% in 18 months* and it can work for you too.
I created goals and a strategy, and stuck to it like crazy. It’s simple to do. It’s not magic, or rocket science. It does involve discipline and hard work. But it is so worth it as you sit back and watch those bookings start to trickle, and then flood in, and you realise all of your Ultimate Rewards + your dreams are becoming your everyday reality.
