What’s the secret to getting more clients and bookings? Why is it some photographers suddenly become ‘famous’ almost overnight, yet you seem to be working all of the hours God sends and yet you still aren’t getting client bookings?
One of the questions we often get asked by photography students and mentorees is – how do we get more clients?
We all seem to want the same thing, whether we are fashion photographers or wedding shooters. More bookings, more shoots, ultimately more $$$. It’s a great feeling when you get to that point when you’re turning down work and you can almost set your prices to whatever you want them to be, but getting to that stage isn’t always easy.
Too often we see our contemporaries and friends all of a sudden launch into the stratosphere somehow- they’re featured everywhere, their fee shoots through the roof, their diary is full, they are living the photographer’s dream.
So what’s the secret? Why is it some photographers suddenly ‘famous’ overnight, yet you seem to be working all of the hours God sends and your dreams still seem so far away?
The secret to getting more clients isn’t stalking your favourite editor and thrusting your portfolio under their nose while they drink their morning coffee. It’s not about tweeting every single photo you create until your fingers fall off.
The secret to getting more clients to book you is to create your winning strategy.
Your winning strategy is a fail-safe plan that if you stick to, has a snowball effect. You follow the steps, and a few things happen, but nothing really of any huge significance. You follow the steps and a few more things happen – the snowball gets a little bigger. You carry on following them and the snowball gets pretty big – and so on, until your snowball is the biggest and most beautiful snowball in the land, attracting more and more ‘things happening’ – clients booking you- as you go.
What does a winning strategy look like?
Everyone’s strategy will be different depending on their genre, experience, and client base (for more information on who your client base really is, read How Beyonce Helps Your Business here) so it’s up to you how you create it.
But following these guidelines on what to include and how to create your winning strategy can help you to ensure your strategy brings you success.
Creating A Strategy That Attracts Clients
Oh yeah, you learned this one in business class. Keep it simple, stupid. Too often we run ourselves ragged trying to keep up with tweeting a thousand times per day, designing the perfect logo, redesigning our sites every three months, blogging about anything and everything. The trick to creating a strategy is to keep it really simple; so that you can follow it day in, day out.
Do you want to follow a daily strategy or a weekly strategy? I set myself three daily marketing tasks so that I know once they are done, I can take the pressure off myself and go have fun with my family, knowing that my business is getting to where it should be. This is my daily strategy as for me, that is a realistic chunk of my day spent aiming to attract my target clients.
What works for you? What can you realistically accomplish in the time that you have each day?
